The tanuki is a raccoon dog. Over the centuries it has been portrayed now as a cunning and evil creature, now as a naive and clumsy animal, but always endowed with supernatural powers and an irresistible desire to play teasing humans. Although in legends and popular stories the tanuki is often represented as a sinister creature, in art it has always preferred to immortalize the more comic side of this creature. In particular in the representation of the testicles (which become bags carried on the shoulder or drums) which became a symbol linked to prosperity and luck.
